The first in our series of “hidden gem” glamping sites, we give you the lowdown and talk to the owners of Sea Spray sailing boat glamping in North Devon, in a location that you might not expect…
Lockdown saw a huge rise in domestic travel not only here in the UK but in countries all over the world. With borders all but closed to the holiday traveller, glamping exploded in popularity.
More and more landowners have taken advantage of the glamping trend, whilst others have diversified, leading to an incredible array of glamping accommodation options.
Think glamping though and you might be picturing a furnished bell tent or yurt, complete with comfy ‘proper’ bed, fairy lights and bunting or even a rustic off-grid, tiny wood cabin.
We’ve stayed in everything from converted horse boxes, yurts and treehouses to army trucks in the past, but the accommodation on offer at Sea Spray in north Devon is way up there on the quirk scale and quite unlike anything we’ve seen before.
Sea Spray Glamping, North Devon
Located on Lemons Farm, Sea Spray is a glamping boat in the middle of a private orchard. It’s a truly incongruous sight, a little sailing boat situated in a sea of green, with expansive views of Exmoor and no large body of water in sight.
The interior of the boat has been designed with comfort in mind and here you’ll find a comfy bed and plenty of cushions and blankets, making for super cosy sleeping quarters.
Steps away from Sea Spray, you’ll find a fire pit, seating, an outdoor shower, composting loo and a well-equipped camp kitchen – everything you could want or need for a relaxing glamping break.
We had a chat with owners Katherine and Tino and asked them about the inspiration behind Sea Spray and whether they could share any insider tips about getting the most out of a stay there.
What was the inspiration behind Sea Spray?
From the very first time we looked around Lemons Farm, we were blown away by the views from the orchard. At the time, it was an untamed field, full of brambles, a sea of nettles, old apple trees and not much else. We could see that this was a special place and knew that with a bit of love and care we could turn it into somewhere really unique for entertaining friends, welcoming guests, or just having a family BBQ.
Having explored lots of the UK camping and glamping over the years, we have stayed in some amazing inspirational places and knew we wanted to do something different to a typical yurt or tipi. We both love the sea and wanted to bring that seaside feeling home with us.
Getting Sea Spray off the water and onto a trailer to drive along Devon’s narrow country lanes was no mean feat, but now she’s here and safely settled in our orchard, and we are so glad we picked this beautiful little boat over something more traditional.
Sitting out on deck on a summer’s evening, preferably with a cold drink in your hand, you feel a million miles away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

We’ve tried to keep a nautical theme in the galley kitchen and summerhouse living space, but our main aim has been to create Sea Spray as sustainably as possible. We’ve used second-hand or recycled materials wherever possible, using hazel coppiced from our hedgerow to create the shower screen, or scaffold poles to create the kitchen workspace. The boat’s electricity is solar-powered and there is a tree bog composting toilet for guests to use.
Do you have any insider tips to help people get the most out of their stay?
Our best tip for guests is to switch off your minds from the stresses of everyday admin and fully immerse yourselves in a little slice of Devon’s beautiful countryside.
Don’t plan too much, take every day as it comes and we’re always on hand to give advice on local walks, country pubs and hidden gems. Our first guests after lockdown had a full week’s activity scheduled and after five minutes’ sitting on a deckchair, G&T in hand looking at the view from the orchard, cancelled all their plans and spent the week reading and relaxing on Sea Spray.
