Wondering how to get from Pisa Galileo Galilei Airport to Florence? There are several ways to make the journey, each with its own pros and cons depending on your travel style, budget and schedule. Whether you’re considering the train, bus, taxi, a private driver or renting a car, here’s a clear look at your options to help you choose the best way to start your stay in Florence.
TRAM + TRAIN
Take the Pisa Mover tram that leaves every 5-10 minutes from the airport to the Pisa central train station, a 5-minute ride. Buy tram tickets at tram kiosk.
Then catch the next train to Florence, no reservations needed. Trains leave approximately every hour and the journey takes from 50 minutes to 75 minutes, depending on the train, to Santa Maria Novella SMN, the main Florence train station.
Walk out the front of the Florence train station. The taxi rank is to the left, queue up and take a taxi to your vacation rental in Florence.
Tickets: Pisa Mover Tram and Pisa to Florence train tickets can be purchased in the Pisa airport, online (Trenitalia) or at any train ticket office.
Price: The tram + train will about €16 per person, taxi from the train station, another €15-€20 estimate.
Time: 1.75 – 2.5 hours depending on the train you catch, time you arrive in Florence and distance from Florence train station to your accommodations.
Advantages: Inexpensive, train travel is not subject to road traffic delays. Disadvantages: You could wait for half an hour for the next train, three forms of transportation, so elapsed time could be 2+ hours.
BUS
The Caronna Sky Bus Line connects the Pisa airport directly to Florence. This bus leaves about once every hour during the day and delivers you to a location to a tram stop Tramvia T2 – Fermata Guidoni from which you can take a taxi to your accommodations or a tram into the main Santa Maria Novella train station (about 25 minutes). Tickets: Buy ticket at airport kiosk or online at www.bus.caronnatour.com.
Time: About 1 hour + tram to train station and/or taxi to accommodations.
Price: Bus €15/per person + taxi another €15-20 estimate.
Advantages: Inexpensive. Disadvantages: You could wait up to an hour for the next bus and elapsed time could be 2+ hours depending on traffic. You may have to call a taxi in Florence for which there could be a lengthy wait.
TAXI
Taxis are located on the Arrivals side of the airport. Uber might be available; check with Uber app before flying.
Price: Starts €170 + luggage and other supplements.
Time: About 1 hour + depending on demand and traffic.
Advantages: Fast, easy, minimal logistics. Disadvantage: Higher price.
PRIVATE DRIVER

RENTAL CAR
Rental cars are available at the Pisa airport and can be booked through AutoEurope.
However, keep in mind that you don’t need a rental car in Florence where auto entry into the center is tightly controlled and has steep fines. If you do decide to rent a car, learn where the nearest garage is to your accommodations and if it can lift the automatic fines for entering the city.
Advantages: Possibly faster if you are familiar with the area. Disadvantage: Price, tricky to drive in Florence, and you must reserve a garage spot in advance.
