Think of Rome and it’s almost impossible not to picture ancient ruins, grand temples and the enduring presence of the Colosseum. But there’s one neighborhood we love that feels entirely different. Welcome to the Quartiere Coppedè – a uniquely modern and whimsical corner of Rome unlike anywhere else in the city.

Just beyond the Villa Borghese, this small enclave is an architectural gem set within an elegant residential area of Rome, where ornate façades and imaginative details create a world all their own. With leafy streets and a quiet, local atmosphere, it feels a world away from Rome’s busiest sights. It’s the kind of place you stumble upon and immediately wonder why more people don’t talk about it. That’s exactly how we felt the first time we visited our beautiful Coppedè vacation rental.

The grand Palazzi degli Ambasciatori at the entrance to Coppedè is a medley of styles.

What makes the Coppedè Quarter so remarkable is its architecture. Designed by Gino Coppedè (1866–1927) in the early 20th century, the neighborhood is a wild expression of Italy’s Stile Liberty – the Italian interpretation of Art Nouveau. But Coppedè pushed far beyond any single style. At a time when architecture was moving from 19th-century revivalism toward increasingly eclectic forms, he blended influences from medieval, Baroque and classical traditions with complete creative freedom. Indeed, picking out architectural styles is a rather fun game in Coppedè!

Look closely and you’ll spot playful, unexpected details throughout, from the famous frog fountain to decorative elements like spiders and bees woven into the façades. The result is something theatrical, imaginative and entirely one of a kind.

The charming Fontana delle Rane in Piazza Mincio in the heart of Coppedè.

Originally conceived as a residential development for Rome’s growing middle and upper classes, the quarter was designed as a cohesive, almost self-contained neighborhood. Today, its elegant buildings house private residences as well as many embassies, adding to its quiet residential character.

The Coppedè Quarter isn’t large and doesn’t take long to explore, but that’s part of its charm. Start at Piazza Buenos Aires, where there’s a convenient tram stop, and head down Via Tagliamento. You’ll soon pass beneath the grand arch of the Palazzo degli Ambasciatori, an entrance that feels more like stepping onto a film set than into a residential neighborhood. Continue on to Piazza Mincio, the heart of the quarter, where you’ll find the Fontana delle Rane (Fountain of the Frogs), a playful centerpiece surrounded by some of the area’s most imaginative buildings.

The Palazzo del Ragno is named after the spider above the entrance.

From here, simply pause and look around. Unique façades, painted details and unexpected decorative touches reveal themselves the more closely you look. The Palazzo del Ragno is easy to spot – just look for the spider above the doorway. It’s the kind of place where you’ll find yourself turning in circles, taking it all in.

It’s hard to take in all the amazing details!

Getting There & Nearby Sights

The Coppedè Quarter is easy to combine with some of Rome’s most beautiful and lesser-visited spots. It’s about a 15-minute stroll from the Galleria Borghese, making it a perfect addition after a morning in the gardens. For modern art lovers, the nearby MACRO (Museum of Contemporary Art of Rome) showcases cutting-edge exhibitions in a striking industrial space, with a focus on contemporary and experimental works. Not far away, the Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea offers a broader look at 19th- and 20th-century art, featuring works by masters like Vincent van Gogh, Claude Monet and Gustav Klimt alongside Italian artists, plus with a strong collection of Italian contemporary art.
