Enjoy a beautiful vacation in Rome surrounded by history at Apollo Palazzo.

Rome never stops surprising us. Even after all these years of searching for the most remarkable vacation rentals across Italy, every so often we stumble upon a home with a story so extraordinary that we can’t wait to share it. Apollo Palazzo is one of those rare finds. This gorgeous five-bedroom, five-bathroom residence in the heart of Rome was once the studio Caravaggio, the revolutionary Baroque painter whose dramatic use of light and shadow changed the course of art history.

A plaque marks the location of Caravaggio’s last residence in Rome.

Few artists are as closely linked to Rome as Caravaggio. He arrived in the city in 1592 with little more than his talent, and within a decade he had transformed the art world with his bold naturalism and dramatic chiaroscuro. Many of his masterpieces are on display in Rome’s churches and museums, and now our guests have the chance to stay in the very space where he once painted.

The beautiful vaulted ceilings in Apollo Palazzo were raised for Caravaggio to have more light in his studio.

A Home with History & Beautiful Modern Style

We knew from the moment we stepped inside Apollo Palazzo that it was a very special place. This spacious, beautifully designed home is spread over three levels and includes a private rooftop terrace. Just to think that Caravaggio once lived and painted right here! The top bedroom, remarkably, is the space Caravaggio used as his studio, illuminated by an open ceiling that once flooded his canvases with natural light. The private terrace just beyond has its own story too: it was built so his large paintings could be hoisted up when they couldn’t fit through the stairwell. Today, it’s an unforgettable spot for morning coffee or an evening aperitivo under the Roman sky.

This beautiful terrace was added to raise and lower Caravaggio’s paintings.

Every room in Apollo Palazzo has an elegant style that balances history with contemporary comfort. The main floor has a large living room with a sleek L-shaped sofa and Eames chair, an elegant dining area, a modern kitchen and even a mini gym. Upstairs, you’ll find 5 serene bedrooms spread across two levels as well as a cozy sitting nook and luxury features such as a spa-like hydro mini pool – ideal after a day exploring Rome.

Stay Right in the Heart of Caravaggio’s Rome

Set in the prestigious Campo Marzio neighborhood, Apollo Palazzo is moments from the Pantheon, Piazza Navona and the Spanish Steps. It’s an area rich in beauty and atmosphere, filled with the very streets Caravaggio once walked.
